Case Description
I went to my dentist in Feb 08 he banged around on my tooth really hard (the last upper right tooth) which I had a root canal done on about 8 or so yrs ago. He keep asking if it hurt, it had no pain. Then shortly after the visit my tooth began to hurt, it didn't hurt prior to the visit. He told me I need to redo my root canal and it would cost me $2,600. Now it really hurts but I only have $600 left on my insurance and I'm a student so I can't afford much right now. I am trying to get a job so I can pay for this but I can put it on a credit card. Can some please tell me if $2,600 is too much or if it is reasonable? Thank you!

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

I don''''t think the redo root canal will be that expensive. Seems like there is some miscommunication here. If you can email the xrays, we can give you accurate estimate( based on your student status).

The root canal should not cost this much. however he may have quoted you for a root canal,a post and a crown. Hard to say without seeing you. We would be happy to do a no cost consult on you. Give our office a call and bring a copy of the xray if possible.

Call us at 650-566-0999 on Monday if you are interested. Thanks

Cost Estimate: $<$1500
No root canal costs $2600. What the dentist was likely quoting was the root canal, crown buildup and a crown.

if you are pinched for money do the root canal and buildup only and hold off on the crown. Should come in more like $1500

I agree with the above opinions that you was quoted probably for the root canal, core buildup, and permanent crown. However, what still is unanswered in my mind from your limited description is whether there is an issue of a possible fracture. If your pain is sharp whenever you have chewing pressure, this may be indicative that there is a crack in the tooth that is causing you the sudden pain. Then the decision has to be made whether a root canal can still be done or the tooth requires extraction. These questions can only be answered based on a visual and clinical examination in the office. If you so desire, this office will be glad to evaluate your situation at no charge. Thank you.
