Case Description
Tooth #14 was extracted in May, 2001. My dentist tells me that the bridge (from Tooth 13 to 15) is loose and needs to be replaced. (This is not the dentist who made the bridge). I would like to get a 2d opinion. Would also like to find out whether there is a more permanent solution -- an implant?

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

An implant is an option, but since the teeth on either side are already crowned, a new bridge is the easiest option if there is something wrong with it. If the bridge was done in 2001, thats not very long ago and I would think it should last longer. Of course many factors go into that and it is possible to have a problem after this amount of time. You could crown the other teeth once again and put an implant in between, but that is more expensive and more time consuming that just replacing the bridge. I would have to see it to know for sure. Give us a call if you wish. Hope that helps.

When a bridge becomes loose, it could be caused by many reasons. Often times a patient''''s bite stability is not addressed, and this may very well be the underlying cause of loose restorations, tooth wear, and even nerve sensitivity which could involve unnecessary root canal treatments..Before you invest further in new restorations; whether they it will be a new bridge or an implant, or a combination of the two, you should have a more comprehensive assessment of the overall condition of your dentition. Without proper treatments the restorations may end up failing again.Hope this answers your question. Please let me know if I could answer any other concerns of yours.

I would be glad to evaluate the bridge to give you the 2nd opinion that you are seeking. From your email, you do have several options available to you. Although the bridge is loose, it may be a simple case of recementing the bridge as long as there is no recurrent decay under the bridge. Also, I would have to determine why the bridge got loose in the first place. If this option is feasible, it would save you quite a bit of money.Another option is to replace the bridge. I don''''t know the exact date you had the bridge initially placed because you may be subject to insurance limitations if you do have a dental plan. The final option is also viable for the implant. Your bone condition and the sinus location would have have to be evaluated before a final decision could be made.Do you have the x-rays with you? If you are interested, don''''t hesitate to contact my office. My schedule is flexible to accommodate your needs. Thank you for your kind consideration.Raymond Lim, DDS

here are some generalities.an implant is the standard of care for a missing tooth. a bridge is second choice. that does not mean a bridge is bad though and sometimes a bridge is the better, wiser choice. If you have stable and solid 13 and 15 then a bridge would be a feasible and good choice. If 13 and 15 did not any restoration then an implant would be first choice.without having examined you this is all speculationsincerelychris johns dds
